Kids Clay Play – Summer Pottery Classes for Children (Ages 8–12)
Taught by Cam | July & August | Monday’s & Wednesday’s 12PM - 2PM
This 2-week, 4 session summer program invites children to explore the magical world of clay while building confidence, creativity, and a deeper connection with nature. In Kids Clay Play, students will learn the foundations of handbuilding pottery through playful projects and guided exploration—all in a welcoming, age-appropriate environment.
Through clay, we ask meaningful questions:
How can we respect the materials we work with?
How can art help us understand and express our emotions?
What happens when we blend function and creativity?
Designed and led by experienced educator Cam Hill, this class encourages curiosity, imagination, and self-discovery. Each session includes warm-up activities like fine motor games, quick crafts, and imaginary play before transitioning into hands-on pottery time.
What Kids Will Learn
Core handbuilding techniques: pinching, slab building, and coiling
Safe studio practices and tool use
Nature-based texture and design exploration
Emotional expression through sculpture
Decorating and glazing techniques
Weekly Themes and Activities
* 30 minute drop off window before class starts for play and crafts
Session 1 – Introduction to Handbuilding
Kids will learn the three basic building techniques and create functional pieces such as bowls, mugs, or plates. They'll also get familiar with studio tools and how pottery can be both useful and artistic.
Session 2 – Nature and Clay
This class explores the relationship between clay and the natural world. Using materials like leaves, bark, and shells, kids will create textured impressions and sculpt nature-inspired forms. We'll also learn about where clay comes from through a fun, hands-on geography lesson.
Session 3 – Art as Your Friend
We’ll explore how art can be calming and supportive during stressful times. Through guided conversation and creative play, kids will sculpt expressive self-portraits—realistic or abstract—to reflect their inner worlds.
Session 4 – Glazing and Decorating
In our final session, students will decorate and underglaze their pieces. We’ll celebrate each child’s work and reflect on their creative journey. An email will be sent when everything is fired and ready for pickup.
Absolutely no experience required for this introductory course!
